How Gaply's Community Helped Me Find the Resources I Was Missing for 6 Months

I had been preparing for system design interviews for two months using resources I found through Google. I was reading articles, watching videos, working through the most-recommended books. I was making progress — but slowly, and with a nagging feeling that I was missing something.

A week before my final round at a Series B company, I opened Gaply's community and searched "system design." What I found changed my preparation completely.

The Problem With General Search Results

Google optimises for clicks and engagement. Career advice that ranks highly is often written by people who have never actually hired for the roles you are targeting, optimised for search engines rather than real value, and generic enough to apply to everyone — which means it is specific enough for no one.

The Gaply community is different. Every resource there was shared by a person who found it useful, tagged with the specific skill and target role it applies to, and ranked by upvotes from other members who tried it and agreed. It is curation by people who have recently done what you are trying to do.

What I Found Searching "System Design"

The top-voted result was a specific GitHub repository — a curated collection of real system design interview questions from FAANG-level companies with community-annotated answers. It had 847 upvotes and 12 comments from members describing exactly which companies asked which questions.

I had not found this in two months of searching. It was not on the first three pages of any Google search I had run. But it had been used successfully by 40+ Gaply members preparing for the same type of interviews I was targeting.

I used it for the next five days. Three of the patterns I studied came up in my final round interview. I passed.

How the Community Works

Any member can share a resource — an article, course, video, book, tool, or repository — with a title, URL, topic tag, difficulty level, and target role. Other members upvote it if they find it useful, downvote it if it is low quality, and add comments with their specific experience using it.

Resources can be filtered by Latest, Most Upvoted, or Trending — which surfaces what is working right now, not what was popular two years ago. This matters because interview formats at specific companies change. A resource that was essential in 2022 might give you outdated information in 2025.

One click adds any community resource directly to your personal Learning Library, already tagged and categorised, ready to track your progress through it.

Giving Back to the Community

After my final round, I shared three resources I had used in my preparation — ones that had not been in the community yet. Within a week, two of them had been upvoted by other members who used them in their own interviews.

That reciprocity is what makes the community genuinely valuable. It is not a forum where people share opinions — it is a library built by practitioners sharing tools that worked. Every member who contributes makes the resource pool stronger for everyone who comes after them.

The Specific Advantage of Peer Curation

Algorithms recommend what is popular. Peers recommend what is effective. Those are not the same thing. The most-viewed system design course on YouTube is popular because it is accessible and well-produced. The GitHub repository that Gaply's community surfaced was obscure by algorithmic standards but deeply practical by practitioner standards.

For career preparation — where the goal is a specific outcome in a specific type of conversation with a specific type of evaluator — peer validation beats algorithmic ranking every time. The community is Gaply's way of making that validation systematic and searchable.
